The Norwood Gold Cup
Wednesday, Premier Arena
This historic trophy is the first of the big events at Land Rover Horse of the Year on Wednesday in the Land Rover Premier Arena. Most of those who will start in Sunday’s Olympic Cup use this as a warm-up class at the show. The perennial Maurice Beatson (Dannevirke) is the most successful rider of the cup, having won the class four times.
Ultra Mox Lady Rider of the Year
Thursday, Premier Arena
The coveted Lady Rider of the Year is a crowd favourite, featuring the best female riders of all ages riding a 1.40m course in the atmospheric Premier Arena. The winner will walk away with the prestigious title and prizes as well as a beautiful piece of jewelry thanks to Ray Burmester Jewelry.
Silver Fern Stakes
Friday, Premier Arena
The second biggest class of the show often acts as a warm up for the Olympic Cup, while also giving younger riders a chance at a big title. The Silver Fern Stakes are sure to be hotly contested by a range of capable riders hoping for a big win.
Farmlands Pony Of the Year
Saturday Afternoon, Premier Arena
Late Saturday afternoon the ponies come out in force to contest the most prestigious title in New Zealand for young riders. It’s always a very competitive class with the teenage riders and their pint-sized mounts taking daring turns at top speed.
Saturday Morning, Premier Arena
The winner of the 1.45m Premier Stakes will be awarded the Tom Gadsby Memorial Trophy and follow in the footsteps of top riders including Vicki Wilson and Philip Steiner. The class takes place Saturday morning and attracts thousands of spectators.
The Olympic Cup:
Sunday, Premier Arena
The jewel in the Land Rover Horse of the Year crown, the Olympic Cup is the biggest prize in New Zealand show jumping and attracts the best of the best. Watch Olympians battle it out against up-and-coming young riders as horses contest a course of fences up to 1.60m in height. With a fantastic field of classy riders, this class is one to watch – see if you can predict a winner!
CDI FEI Grand Prix Special
Saturday, Premier Dressage Arena
The CDI FEI Grand Prix special is one of the highlights of the dressage competition and sees New Zealand’s top dressage competitors battle it out in the premier dressage arena. The Grand Prix special is a great class to showcase the skill of the horses and riders as they all perform the same test throughout the class.
GJ Gardner Homes Grand Prix Freestyle
Sunday, Premier Dressage Arena
The GJ Gardner Homes Grand Prix Freestyle is the big title for the dressage riders, crowning the Dressage Horse of the Year with all of the prestige and kudos that comes with the class. With horses performing to music chosen by their riders, the dressage musical is a beautiful display of the skill and time that it takes to get to this high level.
Thursday – Saturday
The dressage kicks off the eventing competition and takes place on the Thursday of the show, followed by the exciting jumping phases.
On Friday, the riders will be tested over a show jumping course followed by the final hurdle of the cross country the next day.
The cross country phase of the eventing will run throughout the showgrounds on Saturday afternoon. Watch New Zealand’s top eventers in the 3*-S and 4*-S tackle the course designed by Chris Ross. With plenty of jumps and space to choose from, you’ll be able to see part of the course from nearly anywhere on the showgrounds. The Hastings, Heart of Hawkes Bay Friday Night Extravaganza is an exciting evening of entertainment, featuring a variety of acts both equestrian and local.
