Simply Sensational Secures Second Eventing Crown
Clarke Johnstone heads to Europe with a second Eventing Horse of the Year crown to his credit.
He and Balmoral Sensation cruised to victory in the CIC3*, coming home to finish the three disciplines on 36.3 penalty points, adding 0.8 time faults to their dressage score.
Andy Daines (Kumeu) and Spring Panorama came up to take second place on 52.3, with Abby Lawrence (Te Puke) and Pseudonym coming in for third on 53.3.
“I am very pleased with how he has performed,” said Johnstone of his horse. “He has been exceptional and just cruised around the course. I wasn’t pushing him at all and was actually surprised at how fast we were.”
He added just 0.8 time penalties to their dressage score over the three disciplines.
Johnstone and Sensation last won the HOY title in 2014, but were unable to defend it last year. They fly to Europe later this month to step up their campaign for Rio.
Samantha Felton (Cambridge) and Ricker Ridge Escada had chased him hard into the cross country phase, but came unstuck and were eliminated, opening the door for Daines who was clear and inside time.
In the 2*, Dannie Lodder (Papakura) and Call Me Al finished as she started, at the front of the field with Aleisha Collett (Waikato) aboard Mi Focus second. Lodder picked up four faults in the showjumping, and added just 0.4 time to finish on 42.4, with Collett finishing on her dressage score of 47.2.
None of the 21 combinations who completed the 2* course had jump penalties.
Course designer John Nicholson was very pleased with the day, and happy to see so many spectators enjoying the sport of eventing.
