Auckland’s Stephie Joustra-Smith made a successful return to the ring, riding in her first show since Horse of the Year last year, the new mum rode off with the Amateur Showhunter of the Year title.

Stephie and her lovely Disney have been very successful in this class over the years, coming second last year and winning the title the previous year.

The win was even more remarkable as it was just seven weeks since she gave birth to daughter, Stella, via an unexpected C-section.

“We started off better than I hoped and as we did more rounds I started getting more confident, I’m very happy with him,” she said.

Disney was qualified for HOY by Stephie’s husband Jono Smith, who also rode Disney is the main title class. Jono is normally more at home in the showjumping arena, but made the change to showhunter in this case.

“He’s an amazing stand-in jockey, showhunter is not his thing, but we have coached him.”

Ohaupo’s Abby Robinson had a great show, also taking second place in the Amateur, on her other mount Lost in Translation. Emily Fladgate and Royal Penny were third and Helen Ensor with Zactac Night n Day placed fourth.
